It is the “Merry Month of May” and there is so much to watch, if we take time to look around us. For many, the first signs of Spring are beginning to show. Watch how the sprouts shoot up almost overnight. Perhaps the snow hasn’t quite melted in your yard yet (and I’ve lived in places in the USA where that was the case)! But soon little bits of green will begin to appear, and the snow (the poor person’s mulch) will have provided richness to your soil. For others of us, it may feel like Spring the whole year. There are subtle changes in what grows, however. So even here in Hawai`i we get to watch new growth. The Lehua blossoms on the Ohia tree seem to spring out overnight. One of my favorite things to watch in May is our college graduation ceremony. The students I see from week to week are all decked out in their kihei and leis. They have blossomed over the past few years into bright members of society. Families and faculty are all there to help celebrate. What a thrill to watch them march in and take their places. Admiring the young healthy bodies of those who can’t imagine ever getting as old as I am;

Praising those who grow out of their timidity enough to give an oral presentation in class;

Crying on the last day of classes because I will miss the students over the summer holiday;

Celebrating with them when they finally receive their Associates Degree before moving on to the next level of education.
