My mind must be slipping…I registered to vote when I first arrived in NC and got my Social Security number/card in September 1960, but I don’t remember having to pay a poll tax or answering any such questions…! Was this done all across the country?
I turned 21 in 1955, and this was in Mississippi. Maybe only that state?? Anyway, I think by 1960, it was no longer a necessity. But I remember it as clear as if it were yesterday. Quite a traumatic era.
