I would value some assistance please; I live in South Africa and own a wooden statue of a Black Madonna and Child which was carved in the early 1400,s. It is approximately 1.1meter tall and came out to Africa from Central Europe with the early explorers, the statue has been smoke damaged and I would like some advice as to restoration of the statue.
Unfortunately we do not have the required skills available in SA and the question arises as to the right thing to do, does one restore it to its former state or does one leave it in a glass case with details of its interesting history, alternatively sell it to an institution where it would receive more exposure and appreciation?

I’m afraid my interest in the Black Madonna is only in what I have collected over the years. I have no idea how to restore your statue. I’m letting this comment go online in case others who read this might have an idea on how to restore it. She sounds beautiful, and I hope you are able to continue to enjoy her.
